Lara, a pit bull found abandoned near the Greek port of Nafplion, is a perfect example of the breed’s incredible resilience and devotion.
Her owner had cruelly tied her to a tree in the middle of nowhere, leaving her with no food or water. Terrified and alone, Lara’s fate seemed sealed. Tragically, the locals knew about her plight but avoided her out of fear of her breed.
No one knows exactly how long Lara endured this misery, but her story took an even more heartbreaking turn—she was pregnant. Alone in the wilderness, she gave birth to four puppies while still tethered to the tree.
For ten agonizing days, Lara miraculously managed to care for her newborns despite her own hunger and dehydration. She protected and nurtured them with every ounce of strength she had left, displaying incredible maternal instinct.
Fortunately, an animal welfare organization was eventually alerted to her situation. When rescuers arrived, they found Lara severely malnourished and dehydrated. To their astonishment, her puppies were alive and playful, a testament to their mother’s extraordinary care and protection.
Sadly, one of the puppies didn’t survive the ordeal, but the remaining four were rescued alongside Lara. The team arranged for a foster home to care for the brave mother and her pups. Linda, from The Orphan Pet, stepped in to provide them with the love and care they desperately needed.
Initially, Lara struggled to trust her new environment. Traumatized by her ordeal, she refused to eat and remained wary of Linda. But with patience and kindness, she eventually began to heal and adapt to her new home.
Today, Lara and her puppies are thriving, thanks to the compassion of her rescuers and her own incredible determination.
