Winnie Harlow is a gorgeous supermodel with vitiligo, a skin condition that causes loss of skin color in patches. She has changed the beauty standards in the modeling world. She is unapologetically fierce and confident.
Winnie was diagnosed with vitiligo at 4 years old.
Winnie, a.k.a Chantelle Brown-Young, was born in the Greater Toronto Area.
She was diagnosed with vitiligo at the age of 4.
“Growing up, I never saw anyone like me on TV, billboards, or the runways. I felt like I was the only person in the world like me. I don’t think my skin condition affected my self-esteem as much as the people around me affected my self-esteem,” said Winnie in her interview.
Her career started unexpectedly.
Shannon Boodam, a journalist, discovered her talent as a model. She filmed a video about her condition that went viral.
“She called me and told me that I should keep modeling, that the camera loved me, and that I was a natural. She didn’t believe that had been my first photo shoot,” recalls Winnie.
Winnie did not give up!
At 19, she participated in America’s Next Top Model hosted by Tyra Banks. She did not win, though.
“At that point in my life, I was told or made to feel like I couldn’t model or that it wasn’t for me,” says Harlow.
Winnie Harlow inspires people with her public talks.
Winnie is the face of a famous fashion brand. She often speaks publicly about beauty standards and has brave opinions.
“I believe beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I always say you should focus on your own opinion of yourself, rather than the opinions of others,” says Winnie.
