Sister Maria Crocifissa della Concezione, a 31-year-old nun residing at the convent of Palma di Montechiaro in Sicily, was purportedly possessed when she wrote the enigmatic letter.
On August 11, 1676, she was discovered on the floor of her cell, her face smeared with ink, and clutching a letter composed of a bizarre mix of symbols and letters.
Historical accounts suggest that Sister Maria claimed the letter was dictated by the devil, who sought to divert her from her faith in God towards malevolence.
The letter spanned 14 lines, and for centuries, scholars and archaeologists have attempted to decode its meaning. Finally, they have succeeded in deciphering the contents.
The letter disparaged the Holy Trinity, referring to it as “dead weights,” and included the statement: “God thinks he can free mortals. The system works for no one. Perhaps now, Styx is certain.”
In ancient Greek and Roman mythology, Styx is the river that separates the underworld from the realm of the living.
