White tongue can be caused by many reasons. You can brush your teeth and clean your tongue to remove the white layer. However, it might not always help.

What is the white tongue?

The white layer can appear as spots, or on the entire tongue, alongside mouth dryness and unpleasant odor. It can be caused by many reasons, from irritation to infection. However, if it does not disappear after several days, you are advised to see a doctor.

Even though we are talking about the white plaque, you should know what other colors mean. A brown tongue means you might drink too much coffee or tea; The red color means you might lack vitamin B. A yellow one means there might be something wrong with your liver.

Why does it become white?

The tongue becomes white because bacteria or dead cells are stuck between the buds. That inflames the buds, and white spots appear on the surface.

On the other hand, an illness might cause it. The geographic tongue is a rare condition without known causes. White spots appear. Sometimes, it might be a reaction to stress, hormonal changes, or foods that irritate the tongue.

• Antibiotics

• Lack of vitamin B12, iron or not eating enough fruits and vegetables

• A weak immune system

• Bad mouth hygiene

• Dental prosthetics

• Dehydration

After piercing the tongue, a white layer might appear. It happens because the number of bacteria increases. Antibacterial mouthwash will help you. However, the white ring around the piercing means that the tissue is healing.

Avoid hot or spicy foods and drinks because they might irritate the tongue.

How to get rid of it?

• Good mouth hygiene.

• Drink enough water.

• Brush your teeth regularly.

• Use mild fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash.

• Brush your tongue or use a tongue scraper.

• Drink cold drinks through a straw.

• Avoid food and drinks that are spicy, salty, acidic, or very hot.
