Disney Legend Richard M. Sherman, the acclaimed songwriter behind classic Disney films like “Mary Poppins,” passed away at the age of 95 on Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Gluck, and his children, Gregory, Victoria, and Lynda.
The funeral service was held on May 31 at Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California, to honor his remarkable life and contributions to music.
Together with his brother, Robert B. Sherman, Richard won multiple awards, including two Oscars and three Grammy Awards. Disney CEO Bob Iger expressed his admiration, stating, “Richard M. Sherman was the embodiment of what it means to be a Disney Legend.”
Pixar’s Pete Docter remembered Sherman’s “infectious joy for life,” while film historian Leonard Maltin emphasized the optimism in the Sherman brothers’ music, saying, “Their music had an upbeat outlook that spilled over into Richard’s life.”
Sherman’s illustrious career featured scores for timeless films such as “Mary Poppins,” “The Jungle Book,” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” The Sherman brothers were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and were named Disney Legends in 1990.
