Growing up in Senegal, Diop’s life took an extraordinary turn. At just 2 years old, her mother moved to New York, leaving her in the care of her aunt. Despite pressure from cousins to use skin-bleaching products, Diop consistently refused, aware of their accessibility in her country and their potential harm to the skin.

Though confessing, “I never tried it, but I’m not going to lie, I wanted to be lighter,” Diop’s encounters with teasing led to isolation, causing her to skip school and feel shame. However, her older sister played a crucial role in helping her embrace the positive aspects of her uniqueness.

Diop faced bias early on, being subjected to mockery for her dark skin. Enduring taunts like “Midnight” and “Mother of Stars,” she chose resilience over dwelling on hurtful remarks, embracing her inner and outer beauty with strength.

The self-proclaimed moniker stems from her rich, dark complexion, symbolizing empowerment. She said: “I gave myself the nickname because of my dark, melanin-rich complexion and because I want to inspire young girls and let them know that we are all goddesses inside and out. How you look doesn’t matter as long as you feel beautiful inside.”

She advocates for the beauty of diversity, encouraging girls to embrace their true selves without feeling the need to conform.
