In Queensland’s Gold Coast, 34-year-old Brooke Atkins, a stay-at-home mom, embraced motherhood in 2022 with the arrival of her son, Kingsley. The couple, including her 28-year-old partner Kewene Wallace, faced the revelation of their son’s rare medical condition.

Although port-wine stain birthmarks are generally harmless, having them on the face, especially near the eyes, can be associated with conditions like Sturge-Weber Syndrome and glaucoma. These conditions might result in seizures, disabilities, and potential vision issues, ultimately leading to blindness.

Unfortunately, Kingsley received diagnoses for both conditions, prompting worries about his overall well-being. Brooke, also the mother of a 2-year-old named Amarni, highlighted the progressive nature of port wine stains, noting they tend to darken with time.

Additionally, trolls labeled Brooke as a “monster” for choosing to eliminate her baby’s facial birthmark. This condition may lead to raised bumps, ridges, and the potential for vascular blebs, posing a risk of dangerous bleeding. Once a port-wine stain progresses to this stage, laser treatment becomes challenging due to the already damaged skin.

The mother emphasized that her choice was based on her child’s well-being, highlighting the importance of early intervention for a successful treatment outcome.

Additionally, Brooke emphasized that the laser treatment aimed to safeguard the skin’s health rather than completely remove the birthmark, preventing further harm to the affected area. Despite her clarification, online critics persisted, with one suggesting the birthmark was barely visible, implying the procedure served the mother’s interests more than the child’s. Another accused Brooke of potentially instilling insecurity in her son from a young age.

Brooke Atkins openly shared her dismay at the hurtful comments, revealing the emotional toll on her family. She urged a deeper understanding of her son’s condition before facing judgment. “I’m trolled for lasering my baby’s face, but I know I’m right,” the mom said. “It’s not like I got up one day and decided, ’Hey, I’m going to get rid of his birthmark. I don’t think he’s cute.’ I think he is the most beautiful boy in the whole entire world. There is no doubt about that,” she emphasized.

Despite facing significant social media criticism for choosing the procedure for Kingsley, some have rallied to her defense. Supporters argue that, as his mother, she knows what is best for him.

However, the path to recovery remains extensive.

Furthermore, the mother expressed that their family’s journey is in its early stages, with a significant path ahead. Despite more than 20 hospital visits, consultations with 10 specialists spanning 5 medical departments, and various tests and treatments, her son remains a joyful, loving, and charming child.

Brooke Atkins remains hopeful about her son’s future and is committed to steadfastly supporting him through any potential challenges.
